Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This essential “time element” has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate. Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.

The San Jiao, or triple warmer, in Chinese Medicine is associated with fascial system as understood in contemporary medicine. Historically referred to as the General of Irrigation.  The Fascia/San Jiao plays a crucial role in the transformation of nutrients and Qi within the body.

Fascia is a phenomenal component of our body. It can be thought of as our armor. But also our packaging, like shrink wrap that keeps our bodies, our organs, our muscles, and our cells intact.  However, back to the armor...Stresses and traumas which occur get trapped in this multi-dimensional and multi-functional layer of our bodies to protect us. So where is the Problem? We are protected, right. Yes we are. The only problem is the defense system does not turn off. What was a protection for your shoulder 22 years ago may very well be what is restricting you from combing your hair today. This amazing tissue of the body gets very little circulation when it is restricted and may get denser or tighter as the years go by, if it is not released. Myofascial Release can persuade this previously neglected tissue to relax once again.
